Nissan engineers made sure the 350Z's VQ35DE engine matched its sleek aesthetics and thrilling performance, using an aluminum block to reduce weight, weight, efficiency and boost horsepower and torque for an enjoyable driving experience for both street use and track racing.

The VQ35DE engine boasts a number of improvements that make it stand out, such as its forged-steel crankshaft, titanium valves and lightweight connecting rods - helping it achieve an incredible power-to-weight ratio of 9.1 pounds per horsepower compared to 12.5 for earlier models.

For the first time ever in an automaker's history, an automatic transmission was offered for sale in the Z, featuring one of the most sophisticated 5-speed automatics at that time: this 5-speed ATX was one of the first double-cone synchronizers and copper alloy double baulk rings to improve shift feel and durability - offering more control and better acceleration response to acceleration demands than previous ATX models. Furthermore, manual shift mode provided additional driver control over shifting process; additionally it included manual mode shifting.
