The Porsche Taycan - A Masterclass in Electric Driving

Although entering a Taycan may be challenging due to narrow entryways for both doors, once inside you'll discover a masterclass in modern electric driving. Even its entry-level rear-wheel drive model corners with astonishing precision and offered excellent grip in our tests.

With PASM active suspension installed, your car becomes very compliant, smoothing over speed bumps and potholes while giving a sense of connection with the road surface.

Powertrain

The Taycan is powered by two electric motors - one motor for each rear wheel - providing up to 562 horsepower and an acceleration time of just 2.8 seconds, depending on which model is chosen. Furthermore, multiple driving modes and an eco mode provide for tailored performance according to particular driving situations as well as improved range.

The battery pack is integrated into the underbody for low center of gravity and sporty driving characteristics, acting as both load-bearing component and housing of cooling and electronic components that protect them from environmental influences. Removing its 1,389 pound pack involves undoing 28 screws, disconnecting its high voltage connector and moving around 10 bolts that hold parts of both front and rear subframes.

Porsche's drive system has been tailored for 800-volt technology, meaning electric motors can produce greater torque at lower speeds while using less energy, as well as providing for smaller gear ratios on both axles that increase efficiency while decreasing noise and vibrations. Furthermore, Porsche offers an exclusive locking feature on their rear axle that distributes power differently depending on which driving mode has been selected to create more traction if desired.

Porsche has further maximized performance and efficiency with their drive system by using liquid cooling instead of traditional radiators, which improves heat exchange while decreasing weight and maintenance costs. Additionally, Porsche has charged their battery at an increased level to reduce charging times for shorter charge up times.

The Taycan's combination plug is compatible with both AC and DC charging standards; CCS plugs in Europe and North America while an 800-volt booster enables 800-volt charging - giving it a maximum 270 kW charge rate that can take it from zero to 80 percent full in just 22.5 minutes while adding over 60 miles of range in under six minutes!

Porsche utilizes a lightweight material in their battery's outer shell that reduces weight while increasing rigidity for improved handling, claiming up to 150 mph speeds of use and lasting over 1000 hours at temperatures below 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

Chassis

With its Cd value of around 0.26, the Taycan attains excellent aerodynamic properties due to carefully considered design features. This contributes not only to reduced energy consumption but also increases range. One such example are air flaps in the front aprons that open and close according to driving conditions to reduce frontal area and optimise air flow - these help further minimise frontal area. In addition, Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA) system lowers car in two stages at higher speeds to further lower frontal area and Cd value and improve performance and improve performance and improve performance and range.

Taycan's impressive acceleration can also be attributed to its powertrain. Equipped with permanent magnetic synchronous electric motors (PMSMs), or permanent magnet synchronous permanent magnet synchronous electric motors. Each PMSM uses rare-earth magnets embedded into its rotor which rotates with output shaft and creates magnetic field that generates torque, driving drive wheels.

The Taycan's electric motors generate an astounding peak output of 600 kW and can accelerate it from zero to 100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds - an exceptional figure which can be reproduced time after time.

The Taycan sets new standards in driving dynamics and everyday practicality thanks to its cutting-edge chassis and drive systems, setting new benchmarks in terms of driving dynamics and everyday practicality. Acceleration control for this electric sports car lies primarily with its brake pedal for reproducible, predictable and consistent behaviour regardless of battery charge or temperature; thanks to an impressive recuperation output of 265kW; wheel brakes activate only when absolutely necessary.

Additionally, the drive systems in the Taycan have been enhanced to be more responsive. Driving modes can be selected via a mode switch on the steering wheel and vehicle configurations can be selected via touchscreen centrally. This enables access to numerous apps including Porsche Communication Management in an intuitive manner and to personalize them individually.

RECAS, the Rear End Collision Avoidance System is another new feature designed to prevent rear-end collisions. It monitors traffic behind the car and, should a potential danger present itself, alerts traffic ahead by flashing rear lights. You can switch this function off or on in the settings menu of Porsche Communication Management.

Interior

Porsche cars have always been known for their interiors being an aesthetic delight; and the Taycan is no different, featuring a futuristic cabin packed with high-tech features. The instrument display behind the steering wheel displays battery status and charge speed (it varies according to temperature), while at its tips there are small touchscreens which offer quick access to settings like lights, suspension, and ESP settings.

The top of the dashboard features two touchscreens: one measuring 10.9 inches is integrated into the dash; while an 8.4-inch touchscreen can be used to manage climate settings, enter navigation details, use wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto features and use handwriting recognition features to help enter addresses easily.

An integral component of any infotainment system is an intuitive home screen, which can be customized to feature all the apps and content most frequently used by its owner. The Taycan offers front passenger displays so they can control settings without distracting the driver; rear seat entertainment systems may even be included along with heated and ventilated front seats, leather-wrapped sports steering wheels, wireless phone charging capabilities, four USB ports, automatic climate control settings and ambient interior lighting features.

The Taycan's cabin is also exceptionally quiet when traveling at freeway speeds. While you will still hear some faint murmuring from its motors and transmissions under acceleration and braking, this noise level is much lower than you'd expect for such a powerful electric car; conversation is even possible at these speeds!

The front seats of the Taycan are luxuriously comfortable and supportive, featuring plenty of adjustment options. Standard options for the standard model are partial genuine leather upholstery while those looking for more can opt for full leather or Race-Tex with heating and massaging features. Both front seats can also be power adjusted with memory settings included as standard features; back seating includes two sets of LATCH connectors to install child safety seats if necessary and accommodating five passengers is possible by configuring two+1 seating arrangements that reduce rear legroom slightly.

Technology

2024 Porsche Taycan technology goes far beyond just impressive acceleration figures and typical sports car traction; it also provides drivers with comfort and convenience features to help keep their focus on the road ahead of them.

An optional Adaptive Cruise Control keeps a preset speed while automatically adjusting to the distance of vehicles ahead. This feature helps to keep your eyes on the road during long highway drives, slowing down or stopping altogether to prevent you from colliding into SUVs and pickup trucks behind. Furthermore, its gentle steering can prevent unintentional lane departure.

Traffic Sign Recognition provides another safety feature, displaying important road signs on your infotainment screen so you can stay aware of speed limits and other regulations. Driver Alert Monitoring monitors for signs of driver fatigue or inattention and sends alerts if either occur.

Experience a smooth ride with the Taycan's active suspension and electric power steering systems, as well as its rear-wheel drive system and 4WD option for agile handling. Plus, its Comfort Drive mode can ease long motorway drives by counteracting body lean by using electric motors to keep the vehicle level on the road.

For mountain roads that feature twisty turns and tight curves, Sport drive mode can help. This mode makes the car more responsive, and even allows it to reach top speeds of 155 MPH! In addition, this driving mode activates regenerative braking boost to help overcome steep climbs or sharp turns more effectively.
