Interested in an attractive yet budget-friendly sports car that can still do damage on the track? Consider the 350Z. Not only does it look stunning but its steering and power will allow it to reach 60mph in under six seconds!
It's an excellent driver's car with its powerful engine and chunky manual gearbox (except for its automatic variant ). Additionally, its construction should make it fairly burstproof over the years without too many issues arising.
Engine
Nissan engineers made sure the 350Z's VQ35DE engine matched its sleek aesthetics and thrilling performance, using an aluminum block to reduce weight, weight, efficiency and boost horsepower and torque for an enjoyable driving experience for both street use and track racing.
The VQ35DE engine boasts a number of improvements that make it stand out, such as its forged-steel crankshaft, titanium valves and lightweight connecting rods - helping it achieve an incredible power-to-weight ratio of 9.1 pounds per horsepower compared to 12.5 for earlier models.
For the first time ever in an automaker's history, an automatic transmission was offered for sale in the Z, featuring one of the most sophisticated 5-speed automatics at that time: this 5-speed ATX was one of the first double-cone synchronizers and copper alloy double baulk rings to improve shift feel and durability - offering more control and better acceleration response to acceleration demands than previous ATX models. Furthermore, manual shift mode provided additional driver control over shifting process; additionally it included manual mode shifting. In addition, its five speeds made acceleration even quicker and responsive; its 5-speed ATX transmission used synchronization technology which enabled smooth shifting with quick response to acceleration demands while its synchronized transmission was designed to smooth shifting characteristics, smooth shifting capabilities were further improved through smooth shifting action while its double cone synchronizers improved feel and durability further improving shift feel and durability further.
The 350Z was distinguished by its single-piece carbon-fiber driveshaft. This replaced its two-piece steel unit and resulted in a 40% weight reduction, as well as less noise, vibration and harshness. Furthermore, its automatic transmission was made easier to maintain - its "fill-for-life" ATF eliminated any need to change fluid under normal circumstances.
Nismo models of the 350Z were available for only a short period. These cars featured enhanced suspension performance as well as more aggressive styling elements and upgraded wheels and tires; making it a popular choice for autocross competition.
When looking for a used Nissan 350Z, make sure it comes with a clean title and shows no evidence of being salvaged or rebuilt engine. Also look out for uneven tire wear and scuffed alloy wheels; and, if the 350Z has been driven hard, inspect its transmission closely for signs of excessive wear or damage if any. A manual transmission is generally preferable over automatic for drivers looking at using it on tracks or competing driving events.
Transmission
The 350Z sports car is a rear-wheel-drive design. The engine sits in the front and drives rear wheels through an innovative 6-speed manual transmission with close ratio gearing from first through fifth speeds for high performance driving, and an overdrive 6th gear for improved fuel economy and reduced engine noise on highway drives. Through structural analysis, its size and weight was also reduced for enhanced performance and handling.
The Nissan 350 Z comes in both coupe and convertible versions, both built on their FM platform. This architecture places the engine behind the front axle to provide better weight distribution and greater handling capability; upgrades for suspension are easier as well. Furthermore, coupe models make for more practical daily drivers due to their large trunk capacity and spacious back seats.
Buyers of the 350Z can choose from an impressive array of accessories and options to personalize it as desired, including navigation systems, premium audio systems, power seats and wheels/tires of their choosing.
2005 saw several standard features added to the 350Z Enthusiast model that increased its appeal, such as height-adjustable driver's seats, heated side mirrors and tire pressure monitoring systems. Furthermore, rev-matching engine downshifts was programmed into this vehicle.
Nismo Edition was introduced to the 350Z in 2007, featuring the VQ35HR engine with viscous limited slip differential and traction control system, along with a new 6-speed manual transmission, front fascia, rear spoiler and side skirts that were race-inspired, as well as brushed aluminum accents in its interior - including mounting of gauge pod directly onto steering column; Touring model also comes equipped with six CD changer and 8" Bose subwoofer; while buyers could also add leather-appointed seats and sunroof as well as power steering column mounted shift lever for even further customizations of these modifications.
Brakes
The 350Z's 3.5-liter V6 is an efficient and capable powerplant. In manual models it produces over 300 horsepower and can bring the car up to its redline quickly with just one touch on the throttle. Power is linear across its entire rev range; however it falls short of feeling like an authentic V8 engine.
The Z's rear-wheel drive system provides impressive acceleration when set to sport mode; however, its stock brakes often struggle under highway speeds or during hot laps at the track. Upgrading these inexpensively can significantly enhance its performance.
AutoZone has everything you need for your Nissan 350Z's manual or automatic transmission braking needs, from high performance brake pads with premium friction material for effortless driving experience, to our emergency roadside assistance service. No matter where your adventure may lead you. Our brake pads offer added braking power when driving on unfamiliar terrain or at speeds beyond your limits - AutoZone has your automotive solutions!
Our Brake Pads for Nissan 350Z come equipped with our proprietary AeroRotors to enhance cooling, stainless steel brake lines for precise modulation, and a special ceramic formula that reduces heat and fade resistance for an experience that's smooth, consistent, and responsive.
Our selection of replacement calipers features only top brands available, designed specifically to work with larger rotors and can withstand aggressive driving styles without flexing or cracking under strain. In addition, these special piston designs increase clamping force without expanding in diameter.
The caliper itself is made of aluminum for lightweight durability, and cooled using a high-flow stainless-steel heat sink. Furthermore, pressure testing ensures quality while an EPDM rubber seal resists leaks to further ensure safety.
The pistons for disc brake calipers are housed within their respective housings that are bolted onto wheel uprights. This keeps them out of your way when pressing hard on the pedal and gives more precise control over how much brake force to apply.
Safety
Nissan has designed the 350Z to provide you and your passengers with a comprehensive set of safety features to keep you protected while on the road. Nissan's 360 deg safety shield includes forward collision warning, intelligent cruise control, automatic emergency braking, blind spot warning, lane departure alert, rear cross traffic alert and high beam assist as some key highlights.
The 350Z has long been a favorite choice of amateur and professional drivers competing in SCCA events, often winning both national and regional championships, as well as being popular for autocross competition. A SCCA GT-2 prepped 350Z took third in Touring 2 category at 2003 season runoffs while Nismo equipped coupe took its class title in 2008.
Government crash tests awarded the 350Z four out of five stars for frontal and side impact crashes. Furthermore, all models but its base model feature antilock brakes and traction control while GT and Touring models come equipped with upgraded Brembo calipers and rotors to increase stopping power.
Other standard features of the Enthusiast model include a three-bay gauge cluster, air conditioning, cruise control and a 7.0-inch color display with Bluetooth phone pairing. Enthusiast models also add HomeLink (universal transceiver), bi-xenon headlights, power seats and steering wheel audio controls, while Touring features Bose audio system, dual front airbags and keyless entry with push button start; while Premium Blaze Red, Sunshine Yellow and Mystic Maroon models come equipped with exclusive rear spoilers and Rays forged aluminum wheels.
Prior to purchasing a used Nissan 350Z, be wary of any excessive or strange modifications. These cars tend to attract wannabe street racers on tight budgets who modify them mechanically and aesthetically in ways that could compromise safety. When searching for one near stock quality it would be more prudent. Also check for worn tires, uneven tread wear or scratched alloy wheels; all common problems among older sports cars.
